Dolly is beautiful and friendly.
She was brought in by a lady who
found her and had intended to keep her, but Dolly and the dog she already
had didn’t get along so she surrendered Dolly.
In the meantime she took
Dolly to the vet and got all of her vaccinations.
Can someone find a

Due to New York’s weak laws when it comes to certain aspects of dogfighting, it is now hailed as the dogfighting capital. In all 50 states, dog fighting is a felony, until last month in New York, spectators could get off scott-free if they didn’t wager or pay admission and it is one of only three states where keeping dogs for dogfighting is only a misdemeanor.

Even now spectators only get a ticket for the first offense and the second is a misdemeanor. Not too much of a threat legally.

John Goodwin of the Humane Society said, “On any given weekend, New York has more dogfights than any other city. It’s a felony, so it’s not in your face but we hear about it happening in body shops, empty warehouses and new developments that are still under construction. Guys drink beer, place bets, watch the dogs and leave. Construction workers return on Monday to find the bloody aftermath.
”

Big money is the draw, between $1500 and $15,000 purse with the really big money in breeding pitbull for the ring. A champion stud can fetch $500 a day.

Underground registries document fighting pedigrees, “kind of like the American kennel club.” Goodwin said. “They’ll even list the dog’s winning titles. It’s a shockingly organized criminal industry.

For 30 years, the Sporting Dog Journal, the central organ of the dog-fighting world, came out of New York. “It had 6,000 subscribers and ran 120 pages a month, with several hundred detailed fight reports,” Goodwin said.

Along with dogfighting, you usually find drugs and guns as well. Dogfights range from impromptu street corner and alley fights to the highly organized and just as highly secretive big money matches.

Since the Vick debacle, the heat has been on this bloodsport and people are more aware of it and less wary of reporting it when they notice the signs. It’s an entire cruel underworld and the dogs are not the only victims. Often children and teens are drawn into the ‘world’ with gang affiliation. Young people quickly become desensitized to to pain and blood and violence and death.

This is a crime that kills, not just dogs, but heart and spirit as well.

This is a courtesy listing for a dog in a local animal control
facility we are attempting to help. Romeo’s time is very limited.

He is in a high kill facility.
IF we can find a qualified adopter or
rescue we will assist in saving this great boy.

Romeo is about 3 years old.
He was found huddled in the woods
licking his wounds, we assume he was dumped there.
Romeo is a total
lover with people, he has been exposed to children around 10 years
old and did wonderfully.
It seems aside from many healing punctures
and scrapes he is in pretty good shape.
He does have trouble using
his front leg which has a large amount of swelling and is very
painful.
He will need some serious recovery time in a nice quiet
environment.
We are not sure what medical treatment Romeo may
require so please do not apply if you are not financially able to
care for this boy.

Romeo will go to a home with a spayed female dog only.
We will be
looking for an excellent vet reference, a securely fenced yard, no
cats, and previous Pitbull experience.
Please do not inquire if you
do not meet these requirements.
All applicants will be thoroughly
screened and a home visit will be required.

The shelter staff think I am about 14 years old

I have been at the shelter since Jun 30, 2008

Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Even the most experienced shelter staff and volunteers (who think they’ve seen it all), have to shake their heads in wonder at Tony. This 14 year old blind cocker spaniel was found as a stray on 6/30/08. He was covered in fleas, emaciated and dehydrated. He weighs only 22 pounds. He was starving, because being blind, how could he find food on the mean streets of New York. How could he protect himself? What cruelty — to abandon this old fellow on the street and never give him property medical care.. But Tony appreciates the care — and the food — he has found at the Shelter. He’s blind because of cataracts and untreated “cherry eye” (when the tear gland protrudes, obstructing vison). This volunteer watched as his matted fur was shaved off his face (he has severe dermatitis, which will respond to medicine and proper diet). When I held out treats for him (he found them through his sense of smell), he took them gently. He loves the canned food we give him. Our vet staff are treating him for his skin condition and a severe ear infection.

But what he really needs now, is a caring home

Sparky is always waiting at the front of his cage for the next person to greet. He’s a very friendly guy. He’s a bit overweight, but other than that seems healthy. He’s been neutered already. Sparky has been available for over a week now, but there’s been no interest in him. Can someone give this sweet boy some help? He needs out soon. Sparky’s tracking number is 7816.

Thank you for your interest and concern regarding Jenny, the Dallas Zoo’s elephant. The Dallas Zoo is committed to providing the highest quality of care for our animals. After careful consideration of various AZA accredited zoological parks and our current elephant habitat at the Dallas Zoo, the Zoo staff has decided that Jenny the elephant will be going to Africam Safari Park in Puebla, Mexico later this year so that she can socialize with other elephants in a fantastic facility. 

Jenny has been a resident of our Dallas Zoo for over 21 years.  She has received tremendous care during her stay.  It has been a very difficult decision for the staff of our Zoo but they have made this decision with only the best interest of this beloved animal in mind.  She will be on loan to this facility and will remain the responsibility of the Dallas Zoo.  She could be brought back to the Dallas Zoo if we so choose.  

It’s important to understand that Africam Safari Park, like the Dallas Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Fort Worth Zoo, Columbus Zoo, and approximately 215 other zoos and aquariums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is an ACCREDITED facility through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) (www.aza.org).  Africam Safari Park has passed their inspection process and has an excellent elephant facility, including three elephants on their 617-acre forested preserve. They will also be adding another female African elephant by the end of the summer to be a constant companion for Jenny when she arrives this fall.  Jenny will receive total quality care and will be cared for by a team of six full-time veterinarians, a full-time nutritionist, an enrichment professional as well as a staff of  six dedicated solely to what will now be a total of five elephants (from a total staff of over 300 employees). 

The AZA standards not only encompass USDA standards but they go beyond them.  That’s why less than 10% of licensed USDA facilities are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and only two in all of Mexico. Even though USDA guidelines are not enforced in Mexico, by sending Jenny to an AZA accredited facility, we are assured that they practice the same stringent guidelines followed by the Dallas Zoo.  Our Zoo will always have access to this facility to witness these standards in practice. The sanctuaries that have been mentioned by the animal activists as a possible place for Jenny do not have these comprehensive standards for operations and care as a part of their formal association.  

Lastly, the Dallas Zoo will not be receiving financial remuneration for sending Jenny to the Africam Safari Park.   

I hope this gives you a better understanding of Jenny’s new home and the care that she will be receiving.  Africam Safari Park is a wonderful organization and we encourage you to visit their Web site at www.africamsafari.com.mx/ to learn more about their institution. The Dallas Zoo is committed to elephants and we look forward to having them back here in a new, wonderful habitat in the near future.
